Problem Solving Squiggles

Please review the notes below.   Squiggles works on all iPhone and iPod Touch models.

If you’re a new Squiggles user be sure to check out the
Getting Started page. This usually answers the most frequent questions or problems.

If your problem isn’t resolved below please go to
Contact Us. Send as much information as possible (the problem, what you were doing when the problem occurred, etc.)

Updates- Please update to the latest version before reporting a problem. It’s likely the problem has already been fixed.

Squiggles doesn’t run or doesn’t paint
New or Update
If Squiggles has never run on your device or stopped working after an update of the app (or OS) please delete it from your device and re-download it from iTunes.
(If this is an update and it’s not working correctly save your current image before deleting)
Hold down on the Squiggles app icon until the icons start wiggling and hit the x mark.
Re-sync to your computer or re-download the update. By default the Apple store has the buy button but it will check and allow you to re-download the app for free since you’ve already paid for it.
Apple tech note on re-downloading apps

Sometimes a download gets corrupted (this seems to be happening more with OS 2.2) and the app won’t run. This has fixed every report of the problem.

So if you’re having trouble after installing the update you can hit Save within Squiggles if you’d like the keep your current image. Quit to go to the display of apps.

Apple controls the iTunes and App Store so if that doesn't work you'll have to contact them.

Also please note the new update requires O S3.0 on your device since this system released fixed a few Apple issues that affected Squiggles. The latest version of the OS is 3.0 (which will work as well)

Purchasing or Downloading Squiggles
If you’re having problems downloading or purchasing Squiggles this is all under the control of Apple so I as a developer can only provide information.
Tips - Go ahead and hit the buy button again. Apple knows that you’ve already purchased it so even though it says buy it will say the purchase price will be 0. (free)
Make sure to set the applications to sync to the iPhone and do a sync to your phone (or Touch).

Pirating - Please don’t pirate the software. A lot of time and effort has been put into the development of Squiggles. Every lost sale due to piracy means less time and effort that can be devoted to improving it. See the video demo to see the program in action.

Squiggles won't Start Up
I've only had one report of this but I know this can happen with any App since your phone memory may fill up with system things or there may be a bug in an update.
To fix this try
Shutting down the phone and restarting.  See bottom of this page for details.
That should fix it but if it doesn't you may need to backup and restore your iPhone or Touch.

Image is black
This is likely caused by being too low on memory.
To fix this try
Shutting down the phone and restarting.  See bottom of this page for details.
That should fix it but if it doesn't you may need to backup and restore your iPhone or Touch.
Please go ahead and report this.

Loading images from Photo Album or Camera doesn't work
This should be fixed for any format of image in version 1.2 If you have a problem please file a bug report so it can be fixed.

How do I paint in landscape or portrait mode?
The orientation of the tools is based on the image you have loaded. If you load an image that is wider than tall it will load in landscape mode.
If you load in an image that is taller than wide it will load in portrait mode.
This is to provide you with the largest, best quality image.
After loading an image, rotate your device to match the orientation of the image and the tools will rotate to match.
You can still rotate your device when working on your image (in some case it may be easier to paint at an angle) but the tools will be relative to the original image.

How do you delete a picture?
When you save a picture from Squiggles  (by hitting the Save button) it is saved in the Photo Album on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

If Squiggles is running Quit Squiggles by pressing the real button on the bottom of the device.
Start up 'Photos' on your device.  Tap on Camera Roll at the top.  Select the picture you want to delete by tapping on it.
This will show the picture.  Tap on the Trash Can in the lower right corner will bring up an alert to delete the photo.  Hit Delete Photo.

If you mean the picture when you start up it's the picture you were working on.  Squiggles only permanently saves pictures when you hit the saved button
so the single working picture doesn't take up much space.
If you wish to replace the working picture just tap on the New Image button in the upper left (+ symbol)
Select a new image or a photo album image.
Then quit Squiggles.

The next time you start it up it will show the last image you working on.
This allows you to keep working on an image even if you get a call or have to stop and do something else.
You can just start where you were before.

How to take advantage of Squiggles images
All saved images from Squiggles are saved to the Photo album. Quit Squiggles and tap on Photos app. Squiggles images can be found in the Camera Roll album.
Select the image you want. Tap the lower left button (arrow coming out of a frame)
You have a choice of Use As Wall Paper, Email Photo, Assign Contact and Send to Mobile Me.
Squiggle images are also imported if/when you import images into iPhoto or other photo application.

Emailed image not showing up in recipeitns’s email
If you email from the Photos app then the image is attached to the email. If this is a problem check with the recipent to see if they can laod and view attachments.
If you email from Squiggles (1.4) it’s is embedded in the email. This is due to restrictions Apple has on apps wanting to email. Not all email applications will display these images. In some cases this can be corrected by enabling the email program to display embedded mime images.
If you need emailed images to positively get there then save the image, open the Photos app and email from there.
Email within Squiggles saves times and steps and works fine with the Mac’s Mail program but it may not be the best solution for all users.

Can’t move or resize overlays
Make sure tool is set to Overlay
Overlay mode will move the front overlay in the area you touched. Each overlay image is in an invisible rectangle with extra space on the sides to help grab the image. (Version 1.4 now allows you to see this rectangle) You may have to move the front overlay away so you can touch an overlay underneath. You can double tap an overlay to bring it to the front.
If it’s already at the front it will return to original size.
If an overlay is too small to rotate or scale try touching on the sides of the overlay (there is an area on the sides outside the actual image).
If it’s a tall overlay you can try touching at the top and bottom.
Sometimes using your thumbs provides more control. If that still doesn’t work double click to bring the overlay to the front.
If it’s at the front then double tap will reset it to the original size and center location.

I want the Overlay image to be facing the other way
Make sure Overlay tool is selected.
Select the Overlay layer by touching it.  If it was just added it should be selected.
Click on Tool and bring up Tools screen.  Click on Flip button under Layers.

Can’t Move or resize Text
Make sure tool is set to Text
Text mode will move the front text in the area you touched. Each Text is in an invisible rectangle with extra space on the sides to help grab the image. (Version 1.4 now allows you to see this rectangle) You may have to move the front text away so you can touch an overlay underneath. You can double tap a text layer to bring it to the front. If it’s already at the front it will return to original size.
If a text is too small to rotate or scale try touching on the sides of the text. Sometimes using your thumbs provides more control.
If that still doesn’t work double click to bring the text layer to the front. If it’s at the front then double tap will reset it to the original size and center location.

How can I get rid of an overlay or text?
Select the Overlay or Text tool as appropriate. Touch or move the layer. Go to the Tools screen and hit Delete (trashcan) under Layers.
You can also make 3 taps on the front layer to delete.

Text resets to center of image after changing font or text.
This is done by design since the size will change with the with any font or text change.

I can’t move an overlay or text after I saved it and reloaded the image
All saved images are put into the Photo album as jpeg images. These don’t handle layers so any saved images will be flattened. Any image you’re currently working on though should allow you to change the layers, even if you quit and restart the program.

The toolbars don’t reappear
Occasionally the system doesn’t provide information when a stroke is done.   Or you've put it toolbars off mode by hitting Squiggles at top.
In these cases to make the toolbars reappear you may do any of the following:
Version 1.2 - Just shake the phone and the tools will re-appear.
Click in the upper left corner (where the New Document Plus sign would be).
(Note that there is an Apple bug such that the very top of the screen where the status bar was, doesn't get inital taps so click where the New Image button is, not at the very, very top left corner.)
or Tap once anywhere on the screen not covered by a overlay or text layer (if those tools are selected)
This only works if you didn't initially click the Squiggles button to hide the toolbars.
You can shake the device but be sure to hit the Cancel button.  If it's just paint, undo will restore it if you accidently hit ok.

The paint is offset from my finger
Go to Settings (upper right button), Click on Set Finger Offset button and double click on the Finger Offset screen. This will reset the offset to be exactly below your finger.

Doesn’t seem to paint
Make sure you have the Paint Brush tool selected.
Go to tool options (lower right button) and make sure opacity is slider is set to far right and the paint mode is Normal (button on left)
Make sure paint doesn’t match the background color.

Paint only seems to work on every other click
You're likely painting with Finger Offset and Cursor enabled.    It's designed to do this so you can line up your paint.
See the demo video of this in action.
If you don't want to do this you can either reset the Finger Offset so it paints under your finger or turn off the Cursor if you don't want or need it.
Turning off cursor - Go to Settings and flip the Cursor switch off.  (allows offset but reacts instantly to paint, no cursor)
Finger Offset -  Go to Settings.  Hit Finger Offset button.  Double tap on view so the finger offset goes back to center.  (Now paints under finger)

Paint strokes are odd

Make sure you have the Paint Brush tool selected.
Go to Settings (upper right button) and be sure to turn off Smart shapes.
Check the Smoothing settings. If this on and set too high any sharp paint turns will be smoothed out. Turn off smoothing or set it lower (left)
Go to tool options (lower right button) and make sure opacity is slider is set to far right and the paint mode is Normal (button on left)

Undo doesn’t seem to work
Undo only works on the background image. This includes any of the paint tools or filters. It does not work on the Overlays or Text. Simply reposition these.  If you accidently deleted a overlay or text layer click the tool options on the lower right and reselect or retype.
Undo actually works even if you quit the program and restart. It also works if you erase the image with a shake.

Hot spots don’t seem to work
If you have a Overlay or Text Layer they may cover the hot spots. The upper left is treated special so the tool bars should reappear. Select the specific features from the toolbar or move the overlay and text.

Loaded Photo is blurry
Sometimes the system provides a lower resolution image.  If you notice the preview is blurry, cancel and reselect the same photo.  If you've already loaded the photo go ahead and reload it again.

When taking photos in landscape mode the camera image is off center and the bottom is clipped while taking a photo.
Squiggles requests a camera image and the built-in iPhone software handles the display and actual photo taking.
Be aware that with 2.2 if you start the camera in landscape mode and rotate it to portrait the buttons will no longer be visible and you’ll have to quit the app.

The move and zoom are ignored when choosing a photo from the photo album.
In order to provide the best quality image, Squiggles loads the full image to fill the iPhone screen.  If you wish to use the built-in move and scale function go to Settings (upper right) and turn on Load Cropped switch.   Note that this will provide you with a square 320 x 320 image.

The images I load in from the Photo album are cropped to a square.
Go to Settings (upper right) and turn off the Load Cropped switch.  Now Squiggles will load the full image into the size of the iPhone screen. (Move and scale settings will be ignored in the Album selection)

The program quits
More than likely it has run out of memory. Unfortunately with the current Phone software sometimes apps aren’t provided much memory to run. The system memory can be filled up by the various Apple and OS programs over time. Taking a photo uses up most of the memory available to an application. Getting an image from the Photo Album uses a large amount of memory as well.  If it's checking email or doing something else in the background this will take even more memory. Squiggles tries to be as conservative as possible and should display a low memory alert. Go ahead and send in a report if there was no alert. If it happens again after restarting Squiggles you may need to power down your phone and then back on to clear system memory. (See
Shutting down the phone and restarting)
It’s a good idea to save at different stages if you’re working on something complex or time consuming.

Shutting down the phone and restarting
Press and hold the top button on your iPhone or Touch.
A Slide to power off will appear.  You can let go of the top button and then slide the button.
This will turn your device off.

To turn it back on hold the top button until the Apple logo appears.
It will take a minute or so but then the home page of the phone will appear.
It should all be exactly the same as before you turned it off. (All your pictures, contacts and music will still be there)
This should have flushed the memory.
